Welcome all of my MOJOERS! I hope this blog finds you lively and well! Lately I have gotten a lot of questions from friends and clients about hair breakage. I’m sure you have signed up for newsletter in which you read the vast list of components that may cause breakage. I will answer a few questions that were emailed to me from a few panic stricken Chicas!

I just colored my hair at home and it started breaking. I had highlights and I put a darker color on them and because my hair was breaking. Now it’s really shedding. What should I do? Help me!

Needing your daily MOJO!

MC Washington DC

Hindsight is 20/20. Stay away from home kit dyes! Many of them are made up of ingredients that do not mesh with professional products. That may have been the case with you. Your hair is lacking elasticity- it can no longer hold anymore chemicals. The chemicals are penetrating the cuticle and literally blowing it up from the inside out! So my advice to you would be stay away from the chemicals and stay away from over the counter products. The over the counter products will leave a wax buildup on the hair and cause it to break. I would suggest that you go to your stylist or find a professional who uses the top of the line products such as Kerastase, Phyto , Davines, Furtere, to name a few. remember, with these products less is best! They are highly concentrated and will deliver the result that you are looking for if used properly.

If using a protein based product, use it responsibly. Too much protein can actually create breakage and may cause hair to be dry and brittle. I usually suggest to clients to use a protein treatment once a week for 4-6 weeks depending on the severity of the damage. Whatever you do make sure you rinse out your conditioner out with cool water and completely. Look for products that will hydrate your hair as hydration will prevent it from breaking.

Your shampoo and conditioner are the products that are going to bring your hair back to its normal Ph level which will stop the breakage. It is never oil or pomade so your hair will be better off if you use these products less.. If you shampoo daily back off. Start out with every other day or every 3 days. It gives your hair time create its natural oils which will begin to start the healing process of your hair and scalp! Take a hair supplement so that the hair that is coming in will be strong and healthy. Also, stay away from the high heat of blow dryers, flat irons, and curling irons (these are hydration killers).

Now, I’m sure I overloaded you with info! So let’s recap:

Stay away from chemicals for at least 4-6 months

Use the best hair care products on the market (worth the investment) follow manufacturers and stylist directions (rinse conditioner out with cool water. Not luke warm!)

Keep the heat on your styling tools to low or medium and decrease the daily usage

Prolong your shampoos

Less product is best

MOJO is what makes your significant other sneak a second look as you pass by to grab your morning cup of coffee. It gets you that fabulous job before the interview is even over. And, it makes you feel extra special every day. MOJO is the special “it” that we all have- and it sometimes gets lost during the dreary months of the winter.

As the spring season approaches, we all have a strong urge to change our looks and increase our MOJO. I challenge you all to go with that feeling and change your hair color and/or hairstyle! Make a “look book” of styles and colors that you like and bring them with you to your next appointment to consult with your stylist!

The winter has done a great job drying out both our skin and hair. Make sure to request moisturizing treatments from your stylist before arranging to release your MOJO. I suggest the Phytologie line of products. It has phenomenal pre-shampoo treatments such as Phytonectar Oil treatment, Huille d Ales, or Phyto specific revitalizing treatment (please refer to Phyto.com for diagnosis and usage instructions). Make sure, before receiving any chemical services, that your hair has a proper balance of moisture because that will:

1. help prevent breakage from the process.
2. repair or mend split ends and actually prevent others from coming.
3. help your color last longer.
4. add long-lasting true shine to your hair.

And for a bonus, ask your stylist to actually add the Huille d Ales in the color. The results are amazing! As a stylist with over 15 years experience, I cannot imagine coloring hair without it! So, don’t chicken out and always remember: Feel Your Best!

Maisha
Giving mojo, daily!
